Path Integral Calculations of exchange in solid 4 He
نویسنده
چکیده
Recently there have been experimental indications that solid He might be a supersolid. We discuss the relation of supersolid behavior to ring exchange. The tunnelling frequencies for ring exchanges in quantum solids are calculated using Path Integral Monte Carlo by finding the free energy for making a path that begins with the atoms in one configuration and ends with a permutation of those positions. We find that the exchange frequencies in solid He are described by a simple lattice model which does not show supersolid behavior. Thus, the PIMC calculations constrain the mechanism for the supersolid behavior. We also look at the characteristics of very long exchanges needed for macroscopic mass transport.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulations of Solid
Recent experimental investigations [20] of solid He have been interpreted as showing possible superfluidity in the solid at low temperatures, below 0.2 K. A solid behaving this way, exhibiting both long range translational order and superfluidity, has been called a supersolid phase. The existence of a supersolid phase was proposed many years ago [1], and has been discussed theoretically. In thi...
متن کاملPath integral Monte Carlo study of 4He clusters doped with alkali and alkali-earth ions.
Path integral Monte Carlo calculations of (4)He nanodroplets doped with alkali (Na(+), K(+) and Cs(+)) and alkali-earth (Be(+) and Mg(+)) ions are presented. We study the system at T = 1 K and between 14 and 128 (4)He atoms. For all studied systems, we find that the ion is well localized at the center of the droplet with the formation of a "snowball" of well-defined shells of localized (4)He at...
متن کاملMagnetic ordering of the three-dimensional Wigner crystal
Using Path Integral Monte Carlo, we have calculated exchange frequencies as electrons undergo ring exchanges of 2, 3, and 4 electrons in a “clean” 3D Wigner crystal (bcc lattice) as a function of density. We find pair exchange dominates and estimate the critical temperature for the transition to antiferromagnetic ordering to be roughly 1310−8 Ry at melting. In contrast to the situation in 2D, t...
متن کاملPath integral calculations of vacancies in solid Helium
We study properties of vacancies in solid He using Path Integral Monte Carlo. We find, in agreement with other calculations, that the energy to create a single vacancy is 11.5K and is monotonic with the number of vacancies. If more the a few percent of the system becomes vacant, we find the system becomes unstable to melting. We show the number of exchanges in the system is increased by vacanci...
متن کاملDebye - Waller factor in solid 3 He and 4
The Debye-Waller factor and the mean-squared displacement from lattice sites for solid He and He were calculated with path-integral Monte Carlo at temperatures between 5 and 35 K, and densities between 38 and 67 nm. It was found that the mean-squared displacement exhibits finite-size scaling consistent with a crossover between the quantum and classical limits of N and N, respectively. The tempe...
